A wrinkle map system akin to something usually used in modern video games, though they're probably more sophisticated than this one. You can use this to add more detail to facial animations, simulate the movement of muscles under the skin in some cases where that's required or dynamic clothing wrinkling, for example that supposedly is in Rise of the Tomb Raider judging by the texture maps.
